Keeping accessories to a minimum, Serena wore a pair of simple diamond earrings and rings from de Grisogono, and a statement watch to allow the dress to take centre stage.

Serena’s hair was expertly coiffed by Nai’vasha Johnson for Dove Hair, who explained that he was ‘inspired by old Hollywood’ when putting together the look, which accentuated her naturally curly texture.

‘We were really inspired by old Hollywood and wanted to create a beautiful, truly glamorous look that would complement her bold dress,’ he said.

‘Serena has such a classic style, so we wanted to stay true to what she loves most, which is mega-glam.’

First, Johnson saturated Serena’s curls with the Dove Care Between Washes Re-Styling Milk, ensuring that each strand was ‘fully coated for styling ease’, before combing it through the hair to accentuate her natural waves.

He then pulled the locks into a low bun and ‘added a handful’ of Dove Style + Care Curls Defining Mousse to create extra texture. Finally, once the textured ‘do was in place, Johnson secured it with the Dove Style + Care Compressed Micro Mist Extra Hold Hairspray ‘to keep the bun in place throughout the night’.

Serena also showed off a flawless complexion on the red carpet – with her make-up artist Renny Vasquez revealing that he prepped her skin using product from Kiehl’s, including the brand’s new Calendula Serum-Infused Water Cream, as well as the Calendula & Aloe Soothing Hydration Mask, and the Kiehl’s Hydro-Plumping Re-Texturizing Serum Concentrate.

To ensure she looked fresh-faced and wide awake on the carpet, he also applied the Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado under her eyes.

The Met Gala is the annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute and is the most glittery and exclusive event on the New York fashion calendar.

It is famous for attracting luminaries of Hollywood, of fashion, music, sports, TV and the stage for an evening of fashion and charity to mark the museum’s spring exhibit.

This year, the exhibit and gala are dedicated to the idea of ‘camp,’ as defined by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay Notes on ‘Camp.

The new theme seems decidedly more lighthearted than last year’s hugely successful Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, about the relationship between fashion and Catholicism.

That sumptuous, sprawling show drew more visitors than any Costume Institute exhibit — more than 1.3 million to the Met’s main Fifth Avenue location, and nearly 200,000 to its Cloisters branch — and indeed was one of the most attended shows in the museum’s history.

‘Fashion is the most overt and enduring conduit of the camp aesthetic,’ said Andrew Bolton, curator in charge of the Costume Institute and creator of its blockbuster shows. Bolton said the 2019 show would ‘advance creative and critical dialogue about the ongoing and ever-evolving impact of camp on fashion.’

The exhibit will feature approximately 175 objects, not only clothing but also sculptures, paintings, and drawings.

Designers to be featured in the show include: Cristóbal Balenciaga, Thom Browne, Gucci, Marc Jacobs, Charles James, Christian Lacroix, Karl Lagerfeld, Prada, Versace and many more.

The Camp: Notes on Fashion exhibit will run from May 9 through Sept. 8.
