Boxing fans divided over Tyson Fury’s new look ahead of Oleksandr Usyk fight

Fans are torn about Fury’s new look after a picture from his training camp emerged.

Tyson Fury has been mocked for his “terrible” new look whilst preparing to fight Oleksandr Usyk.

Heavyweight champion Fury has been training out in Saudi Arabia since the end of last year for his undisputed fight against Usyk on February 17. The Brit is hoping to put on a better performance than in his last fight against Francis Ngannou as he was floored by the former UFC champion and only won by one point in his toughest fight of the past decade.

Little has been heard from Fury as he continues his trademark social media blackout to concentrate on his upcoming fight. 19-year-old unbeaten prospect Moses Itauma has been training with Fury before his big fight and he posted a picture of the heavyweight champion that showed him beardless and noticeably slimmer than usual.

“Fury is looking slim here,” one comment read. “Fury looks in shape,” a second user added. “Fury is coming in lighter, still a lot heavier than Usyk though,” a third comment read. Other users weren’t so impressed as they accused Fury of trying to make himself look overweight in the picture.

“Fury looks terrible. He’s pretending to be fat to take attention away from the fact that he’s actually still severely overweight,” one user commented. “Tyson trying to make his skimmed down self still look fat,” a second user agreed. Fury weighed a career-heaviest of 277lb for his crossover fight with Ngannou last October, whilst Usyk came in at 221lb for his last fight against Daniel Dubois.

Fury has also sparred with the likes of former cruiserweight world champion Jai Opetaia and Canadian heavyweight Alexis Barreire for his Usyk training camp. Opetaia, who is set to rematch Mairis Briedis on the undercard of Fury vs Usyk, has since returned to Australia after just five rounds of sparring with the Brit.

“Jai Opetaia has recently returned from Saudi Arabia where he sparred and trained with Tyson Fury. They were fantastic, competitive rounds and an incredible experience for Jai. However any talk of either boxer being dropped is not true. Jai is now back in Australia finalising his preparation to defend his world title and cannot wait to do so in Saudi Arabia,” a statement read.
