Recently Dua Lipa promoted her new single, Houdini, in her own take on the hot pants trend, rocking white briefs atop bright red, high-waisted tights, and a red white and blue semi-sheer top.

The singer shared a video on Instagram in the superhero-inspired ensemble, much to the delight of her 88.6 million followers.

Meanwhile pop superstar Billie Eilish proved the hot pants over tights can have an alternative spin, with black, open knit fishnets and camouflage boxers.

Megan Fox is another star suiting up in the style, pairing an itty brown suit, including miniscule tailored shorts, with tights and pumps.

The trend is especially big with Bravo reality stars, including The Real Housewives Of New York star Erin Lichy. For Bravocon, the annual convention celebrating Bravolebrities, Erin wore her husband’s button down work shirt with hot pants from Alessandra Rich, Wolford tights, and a chunky platform heel.

Erin told DailyMail.com: ‘I somehow got a ton of amazing feedback on the look all over social media and online, and was noted as one of the top looks of BravoCon.’

‘I didn’t expect that!’ Erin said, calling it ‘a total last-minute look,’ since she ‘wanted to do something fun in Vegas.’

Erin thought the mini shorts and stockings worked because the tights weren’t too dark or see through, which kept the outfit ‘casual but still sophisticated.’

For those wanting to recreate her ensemble, Erin recommended wearing tights with no control top and pairing the short shorts with a tank and a blazer on top, or a loose cardigan, or a loose denim button down, explaining: ‘This look is all about balance.’

‘The key is not overthinking or making it too formal, and keeping the look proportionate,’ Erin added.

Summer House star Paige DeSorbo is another super fan of the mini bottoms, as she paired sequined pink underpants with a white button down and silver necklace at BravoCon.

The combination proved controversial, with one commenter on Instagram writing: ‘I love you Paige, but the bedazzled diaper wasn’t your best moment.’

This isn’t the first time the sequined underwear have made an appearance. Kendall Jenner, 27, wore a silver pair of the same sparkling oversized Miu Miu panties on the cover of the Harper’s Bazaar issue, kicking off the underwear as outerwear trend.

And Emma Corrin originally wore a gold pair of the Miu Miu briefs on the Paris Fashion Week runway.

FEMAIL reached out to one of the stylists to find out if the teeny shorts over tights is doable for women who aren’t strutting the runway, and Charlotte, North Carolina-based brand director Mollye Rivera insisted it’s actually easy with the right styling.

Mollye’s go-to for shorts over tights is ‘pairing them with a more fitted sweater and an oversized blazer or trench coat for contrast,’ or a graphic tee and leather moto jacket for an ‘edgier look.’

The stylist recommended a tall boot or chunky ankle boot.

Mollye thinks the shorts over tight sensation is perfect for the holiday season, if you simply wear the bottoms with a ‘festive, tight, cozy sweater and a pair of sling backs, calling the outfit ‘the perfect comfortable but elegant combination.’

This holiday season, it’s time to embrace pantless dressing a la Captain Underpants.
