Richalison FINALLY proves his worth! Tottenham star comes up with timely brace against Newcastle to end seven-match goal drought as Son Heung-min returns to his dazzling best in 4-1 romp

Tottenham finally ended their winless Premier League run as Son Heung-min and Richarlison inspired a 4-1 win against Newcastle United.

TELL ME MORE

Son Heung-min was back to his devastating best after a frustrating recent spell – particularly in the first half – as he set up Destiny Udogie and then Richarlison for easy finishes. The latter made it three in the second half, the perfect way to end his seven-game goalless drought and Spurs’ five-match winless run. Son bagged his second and Tottenham’s fourth with a late penalty, giving Ange Postecoglou plenty to smile about. Joelinton grabbed a late consolation for Newcastle, but Eddie Howe’s side suffered a second resounding defeat in the space of three days as they appear to be struggling to juggle a busy schedule with injuries.

DID YOU KNOW?

Before Sunday, Tottenham were winless in five Premier League matches, despite scoring first in each of those games. They had not experienced a worse run since 2008. Meanwhile, Son became the first player not named Harry Kane to score a penalty for Spurs since August 2021.

THE MVP

Though Richarlison ended his three-month goal drought with a brace, Son Heung-min was at his brilliant best. The South Korean made Trippier’s life a misery in the first half, turning him inside out before setting up Udogie and Richarlison with unselfish passes across goal. An emphatic late penalty was the icing on the cake. If Spurs are to build on this win then he’ll have a key role to play.

THE BIG LOSER

Three days after costing his side two goals in a 3-0 defeat to Everton, Kieran Tripper endured another night to forget. The Newcastle right-back was easily beaten on the flank by Son in the build-up to both first-half goals. The 33-year-old looked tired, but in fairness, he didn’t receive much defensive help from Anthony Gordon.

WHAT COMES NEXT?

Ange Postecoglou’s resurgent Spurs will look to build some momentum when they travel to the City Ground on Friday to take on Nottingham Forest. Before then, Newcastle will attempt to avoid elimination from the Champions League by beating AC Milan at St James’ Park.
