A vile trend on TikTok falsely linking high ponytails with brain damage has prompted Ariana Grande’s fans to shut down rumors that the singer’s signature hairdo has had an impact on her neocortex.

However, ill-informed fans have come to believe a baseless claim that Ariana’s signature hairdo has affected a large part of the brain called the neocortex, but that’s not true.

What is neocortex and do high ponytails affect the brain?

The neocortex is a part of the human brain comprising the largest part of the cerebral cortex, which is said to make up half of the volume of the human brain.

It’s mainly responsible for the functions – attention, thought, perception, and episodic memory. While certain factors such as gene mutation and viral infections are believed to affect the transformation of information to the sensory neocortex to allow an individual to function normally, there is no evidence that the force with which you keep your hair held on your head affects the given part of the brain in any way.

Some disorders that can have an impact on the frontal lobe include frontotemporal dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease.

So, it’s safe to say a high ponytail wouldn’t do anything to your neocortex. Don’t believe the claims on TikTok.

Ariana Grande previously addressed rumors she is ‘sick’

When Ariana’s appearance, especially owing to her weight, was extremely scrutinized, the singer took to TikTok to shut down the critics by spreading body positivity.

In the 3-minute-long video, the singer addressed hurtful remarks about her body and urged her followers to refrain from commenting on other people’s appearance regardless of the intention.

She said: “I know personally, for me, the body that you’ve been comparing my current body to was the unhealthiest version of my body. I was on a lot of antidepressants and drinking on them and eating poorly, and at the lowest point of my life when I looked the way you consider me ‘healthy.’ But that, in fact, wasn’t my ‘healthy’.“

Now, after ludicrous claims about the singer’s hairdo have taken over TikTok, her fans have shut it down.

“Sigh. It’s affecting the Cortex of her hair follicles NOT her neocortex! That’s part of her brain,” said one.

Another added: “This is the most ridiculous theory ever! The hairstyle has nothing to do with the brain. What’s wrong with ya’ll.”
