Who is Alexis Ohanian and how did he meet Serena Williams?

Alexis Ohanian is a technology entrepreneur and investor best-known as the cofounder of Reddit and husband of tennis star Serena Williams.

He was born in Brooklyn, New York, on April 24, 1983 and grew up in Ellicott City, Maryland, later graduating from the University of Virginia in 2005.

Alexis and Serena first met when they ran into each other at a hotel in Rome in May of 2015, and they began dating not long afterward.

The pair got engaged in December of 2016, and they welcomed daughter Olympia the following September.

The two subsequently tied the knot during a star-studded wedding ceremony that took place in New Orleans that November.

Ohanian is known to express his love and support for his wife through sweet public gestures – in 2018 he celebrated both her sporting and maternal abilities by surprising her with four giant billboards along a freeway in California.

The couple’s firstborn is daughter Alexis Olympia, who is now five years old, and was born on September 2 2017 in Florida.

Williams recalled learning she was pregnant two days before the 2017 Australian Open, saying she had her husband fly to Melbourne so she could tell him in person.

Serena experienced a traumatic birth when bringing her firstborn into the world. Following an emergency C-section, she developed a pulmonary embolism 24 hours after her baby’s arrival and underwent back-to-back surgeries.

Williams revealed she was having her second child back in May, showing off her baby bump for the first time at the Met Gala.

At the gender reveal party, instead of a cake to announce the news, Alexis brought out a high-tech drone show that revealed, ‘It’s a…’ as Serena and Olympia looked on eagerly, before it was revealed to be a girl.

Before she knew she was having another girl, Williams admitted she was ‘Team Pink’ though she was ‘unprepared’ if it was to be revealed that she was having a son.

‘I’m nervous because I don’t have any contingency plan if he turns out to be a boy,’ Williams admitted in a video on her Youtube channel.

Dubbed the ‘Mayor of the Internet’ by Forbes, Alexis Ohanian has been the creative mind and entrepreneurial spirit behind a number of the world’s most popular websites.

Shortly after graduating college, Ohanian cofounded Reddit with Steve Huffman in June 2005, creating a discussion and social news website that aimed to ultimately become the ‘front page of the Internet.’

It immediately became a success and, according to Ohanian, boasted roughly 542 million users as of 2017 and was previously ranked the fourth-most visited website in the United States and the sixth-most visited in the world.

He later launched Breadpig in 2007 and Hipmunk in 2010.

He also cofounded Initialized Capital in 2011, helping to launch a number of Internet startups with its seed money.

In June 2020, Ohanian resigned from Reddit’s board and asked to be replaced by a black candidate in response to the police murder of George Floyd.

His latest venture, 776, raised a $176 million fund to invest in crypto, which dwindled to just $6 million as the the sector suffered steep sell-offs last year.

In August 2021, Ohanian spent $550,000 worth of ether at today’s prices on seven NFT artworks that he thought looked like his wife.

He gave her his favorite one as a gift, and wore a version of the image as a pin to the 2021 Met Gala in New York, touting the move in a tweet to boost awareness and garner media coverage.

‘Now we’ve put it into the culture,’ he he told Forbes, noting the move likely increased the NFT’s value if they ever wanted to sell it.

He’s also been very active in promoting the openness of the Internet, rallying activists to oppose legislation like the Protect IP Act and the Stop Online Piracy Act in the United States in 2010 and 2011.

Thanks to his cryptocurrency investments, multiple business ventures in capital firms and his profits from Reddit – Ohanian is currently worth an estimated $150 million.
