87 touches, 96% passes completed: Arsenal loanee sends strong message to Mikel Arteta

Arsenal loanee Albert Sambi Lokonga delivered a fine performance for Luton Town during their 2-1 Premier League defeat to Manchester United on Sunday.

The Hatters had the worst possible start to the game with a defensive error from Amari’i Bell gifting Rasmus Hojlund with the opening goal after just 37 seconds.

Things went from bad to worse with another defensive mishap allowing Hojlund to make it 2-0 in the seventh minute. Carlton Morris reduced the deficit, but Luton could not find the equaliser.

Despite this, there were plenty of positive performances for Rob Edwards’ side. Lokonga has been in fine form in recent weeks and in our view, he produced his best display versus United.

The Belgian ace had 87 touches and completed a stunning 66 out of his 69 passes – an accuracy of 96 per cent. He lost possession on just four occasions and created two chances on the day.

However, his most meaningful contribution was undoubtedly his stunning last-man block to deny Bruno Fernandes, who would have otherwise scored into an empty net.

Lokonga was deemed surplus to requirements at Arsenal last summer. The Gunners decided to loan him out to Luton where he had a frustrating start due to a hamstring injury.

However, since his comeback, he has been a mainstay in the centre of the park alongside Ross Barkley. The 24-year-old has revived his confidence from his time at Anderlecht.

He has certainly sent a strong message to manager Mikel Arteta with his progress and the Spaniard has a big decision to make over his future at the end of the current season.

Arsenal could have a mini-midfield overhaul this summer. Mohamed Elneny could be released at the expiry of his contract while Thomas Partey may be sold amid his injury woes.

Emile Smith Rowe’s future is also uncertain while Arsenal have yet to trigger an extension clause on Jorginho’s deal to keep him for another 12 months. He could leave on a free.

There will be fresh investment in the transfer market, but Lokonga could be a useful player in rotation. The Belgian recently said that he believes he has a future at the club.
