Tyson Fury and his spectacular journey from a 180-pound depressed patient to a punch that the world is looking at.

Of course, it is a disease, not a “strange thought” anymore. How did the famous boxer, who is preparing to fight Deontay Wilder later this month, fight his illness?

The WBC heavyweight championship match between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder on February 22 is just a rematch. The two sides… drew, in a match with similar meaning in December 2018. That was also the only draw in the professional boxing careers of both Fury and Wilder – the fighters have never lost. In that fight, Fury was knocked down in the final round, after being hit quite heavily. But he still managed to get up, and in the end it ended in a draw, even though many people thought Fury won. He was awarded the “Comeback of the Year” award by the famous boxing magazine The Ring. And that is a worthy reward, both literally and figuratively.

Boxer Tyson Fury may no longer exist. The next thing he wanted to do after defeating Wladimir Klitschko in 2015 was… commit suicide. “One day, I woke up and thought today would be the last day,” Fury said. I was going to drive the car into the bridge. I have no more ambitions in life.”

The victory over Klitschko brought Fury 3 of the 4 important championship belts of heavyweight boxing. That’s the pinnacle of glory, if you will. Fury has excellently climbed to the top. But for him, climbing down was too difficult. “I knew about my illness, but I easily put it aside, because I still had a lot of work to do,” he said. My job is to become the world heavyweight champion. But when my dream has come true, I have conquered Mount Everest, I can’t go any further, so what? It’s all time to collapse.”

Tyson Fury once wanted to commit suicide to free himself

Fury suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder and manic-depressive disorder. This is a disease that causes people to move from a state of extreme euphoria to a state of extreme depression. His wife, Paris, recounted that “last day”: “Fury got into the Ferrari. He said before he drove away that he would not return. Time gradually passed until Paris got really worried. She called her relatives to see if anyone knew about Fury. Your phone is turned off.” Everyone at that time only had eternal faith: Fury would recover. And, between the very thin line between life and death, Fury was truly overcome. He recounted: “Before I crashed into the bridge, I seemed to hear a voice saying: ‘Don’t do that.’ You will destroy your family.” I immediately stopped the car. I thought decisively: now or never. I had to overcome this terrible disease immediately.”

It was even more difficult and decisive than what happened in the ring, when Fury collapsed in round 12 and still stubbornly got up to not lose to Wilder. Fury did it. But his evil illness is still there. Now, boxing has become a medicine for Fury to live happily and healthily. “I still have good days and bad days,” he said. But things don’t go too far anymore. I have learned how to keep balance. I know how to think positively and live among positive people. Of course, Paris is always the most active person in helping Fury balance his emotions and spirit in life.

Fury said: “It’s always better to be liked than to be hated. But the only person in the world that I really want to know if I love or hate me is Paris. We know each other like salt and pepper. I’m not the best husband in the world. But I can’t be the worst husband either. We will continue to fight together (with Fury’s disease).”

In the end, Fury can only truly regain balance if he still does not forget the importance of the upcoming fight with Wilder. He promised: “This time will be different. The match will not last as long as the previous match. I will knock him out.”
