Tilda Swinton, who played Gabriel in the original film, comments on the upcoming sequel to Constantine.
Constantine star Tilda Swinton reveals she may not be reprising her role as Gabriel in the upcoming sequel.
Speaking to Inverse, the actress was asked whether she would be involved in Constantine 2 as Gabriel. Swinton replied stating the film’s creative team had not reached out to her, although she left a small possibility of being contacted late. The actress then acknowledged this as highly unlikely as Keanu Reeves, who played the titular anti-hero John Constantine in the first film, is rumored to be replacing Swinton as the archangel Gabriel.
Constantine 2 Producer Shares Promising Production Update
Constantine 2’s producer fuels fan hopes of seeing Keanu Reeves return as Hellblazer in a long-overdue sequel.
Swinton stated, “I’m sorry to have to tell you that I know nothing about this sequel except that I’ve heard it’s happening. Unless they’re very late in calling me, I don’t think Gabriel will be flapping his/her wings. I did hear a rumor, I don’t know if you heard it, that Keanu was going to play Gabriel. Which would be beautiful.”
Will Keanu Reeves Play a New Character in Constantine 2?
The possibility of Keanu Reeves appearing in Constantine 2 as a different character due to his age has been previously discussed, with some suggesting that Reeves may play the character Nick Necro from DC Comics, who was inspired by Reeves’ performance in the 2005 Constantine adaptation. In Constantine, Gabriel is depicted as an angel who transformed into a human form, both male and female, with a profound disdain for humanity. Gabriel stands out among half-breeds for their exceptional abilities, such as manifesting angelic wings and an inability to experience pain.
The Real Villain in Keanu Reeves’ Constantine Had a Secretly Heartbreaking Costume
Constantine features a surprise villain in Tilda Swinton’s Gabriel, but an outfit detail speaks volumes about his tragic disconnect.
While original Constantine director Francis Lawrence is returning to helm Constantine 2. At the time of publication, Keanu Reeves is the only actor confirmed to be back for Constantine 2. Since the end of the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the sequel is seemingly moving forward, but no other actors have been announced yet.
Peter Stormare has been speculated to return to Constantine 2 as Lucifer Morningstar, as Stormare was the one who sparked rumors about the sequel back in November 2020 when he hinted at Warner Bros. actively developing it. Other actors who are possibly not returning in the sequel include Shia LaBeouf as Chase Kramer and Rachel Weisz as Angela Dodson.
The film is slated to be a part of DC Studios’ Elseworlds branding, which includes various projects that won’t take place in the mainline DCU continuity. Matt Reeves’ The Batman and Todd Phillips’ Joker may receive the Elseworlds branding in their next installments, The Batman Part II and Joker: Folie a Deux.
Constantine 2 is currently in development.
