Exclusive: Hershel Rhee actor Logan Kim offers a filming update on The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2, along with a “dark” character tease.
Hershel Rhee actor Logan Kim offers a filming update on The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2, along with a “dark” character tease. The first of the TWD universe’s new trio of spinoffs debuted in 2023, sending age-old frenemies Maggie and Negan on a desperate mission to a zombie-infested New York. Having set up a potential final confrontation between its two main characters, Dead City is set to return for season 2, which should arrive some time in 2024.
As fans await confirmation on an official Walking Dead: Dead City season 2 premiere date, Hershel actor Kim offered his own update on when filming begins, exclusively telling Screen Rant that he starts work on the show soon, while teasing dark developments for his character. Check out his remarks below:
Oh, yes. I’m going to be filming that very soon, and I will say Herschel has a lot more to do now that he’s not kidnapped. And it’s very exciting, and I can’t wait to play such a dark character.
Hershel Going Dark In Dead City Season 2 Could Be Negan’s Doing
Kim’s remark about playing a “dark character” in Dead City season 2 could just be a reference to the show’s general tone, and the grim circumstances in which Hershel and his mom Maggie find themselves. After being held captive by the Croat throughout season 1, Hershel is likely not in a great place emotionally, and the trauma of what he’s gone through could play a role in how his relationship with Maggie develops.
A specifically dark turn for Hershel’s character in season 2 might be a more interesting story development, and the culprit behind such a turn could be Negan himself. Previous Walking Dead seasons have indeed seen Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s complex villain take a mentor-like interest in young characters, at one point trying to turn Carl to the dark side, and later setting his sights on Judith. Could Hershel become Negan’s next unlikely student?
Negan exerting a dark influence over Hershel would be perfectly in character for the former Saviors leader as he gains power in post-apocalyptic New York. After Maggie’s betrayal of him in The Walking Dead: Dead City season 1, Negan might seek to gain revenge through Hershel. Maggie has hesitated in the past when given a chance to take Negan out, but if Hershel’s safety is compromised, she presumably would have no qualms about finally killing her husband’s murderer, finally bringing resolution to the TWD universe’s weirdest relationship.
