Thai authorities have decided to open an investigation into the online sharing of alcohol advertising content in which Lisa is the representative face.
AllKpop quoted Thai media as reporting that on March 17, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Thai Ministry of Health directed the Alcohol Control Committee (OACC) to investigate those who posted and distributed Lisa’s (BlackPink) alcohol advertising images or videos on social networks.
Thai authorities are investigating a case related to the alcohol brand that Lisa represents in Asia.
According to the Bangkok Post , the Thai K-Pop superstar recently signed a contract to become an Asian brand ambassador for a famous alcohol company. As the first female brand representative, Lisa is participating in the global promotional campaign for this wine company. This has led to images and videos of the beauty born in 1997 advertising alcohol being widely spread on social networks.
Worth mentioning, the act of distributing alcohol advertising content is banned in Thailand. Accordingly, Article 32 of Thailand’s Alcohol Control Act, effective since 2008, prohibits alcohol advertising as well as the display of glasses containing alcohol or the display of certain brands of alcoholic beverages. The “Land of Golden Temples” also prohibits the act of encouraging others to drink alcohol. Violators can be fined up to 500,000 baht (more than 342 million VND) or imprisoned for one year or both.
In 2020, when a part of netizens worried that posting alcohol-related photos on social networks could result in a large fine, Thai authorities corrected: “This regulation applies to celebrities.” and public figures, not ordinary people.”
It is illegal in Thailand for Lisa’s images and videos promoting alcohol to spread on social networks.
Nation newspaper reported that, in addition to investigating the distribution of alcohol advertising content on social networks, OACC is also said to be investigating whether Lisa’s alcohol advertising violates relevant laws.
Kachonsak Kaewcharat, deputy director of the Thai Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said Lisa’s appearance in alcohol ads may not violate other countries’ laws because some countries do not regulate alcohol. alcohol advertising like Thailand.
Currently, netizens are discussing whether Lisa is suitable to advertise alcohol or not and whether she will be punished like other celebrities in Thailand.
“The problem is that she signed this agreement outside Thailand, and did not promote it in her home country or on her social media accounts.”
“I think Lisa and her team are not shortsighted enough to sign a contract that would put her in an awkward situation in her home country. As long as the liquor company doesn’t use this ad in Thailand, she’ll be safe. However, she may encounter some trouble if Thai fans share the advertisement widely on social networks or unofficial establishments use this advertisement to sell goods.
“I wonder if Lisa will be punished or the people who spread the content?”.
“Even though the agreement was signed outside of Thailand, as a Thai, she must have known about the strict regulations on alcohol in her home country. Fame must come with responsibility.”
“She is Thai and there would be no problem if she refused this contract from the beginning.”
“There is no reason to prohibit her from participating in activities outside of Thailand. This is not illegal in Korea or Japan.”
“The investigation was opened to investigate those who posted and distributed images or videos promoting Lisa’s alcohol in Thailand. There seems to be no problem with Lisa filming commercials for use in other countries.”
Netizens debated loudly about Lisa’s responsibility in the incident.
