Taylor Swift’s New Movie Milestone Sets An Impossible Challenge For Beyoncé

It might be impossible for Beyoncé to beat Taylor Swift at the box office with her concert film, but there are other big milestones she could reach.

Taylor Swift’s concert film, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, broke records with a box office total of $250 million worldwide in less than two months.

Beyoncé’s concert film, Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé, is projected to be successful, but it is unlikely to beat Swift’s record-breaking milestone.

Beyoncé’s film has the potential to make over $100 million worldwide, a significant achievement for a concert film, and could even outperform Michael Jackson’s 2009 documentary.

Taylor Swift’s new box office milestone for Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour is setting up an impossible challenge for Beyoncé’s upcoming concert movie, Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé, to follow. Swift premiered her film on October 13 following her record-breaking The Eras Tour, with the three-hour journey through her 17-year musical career proving to be a massive box office success. However, Swift isn’t the only major star with a big concert film in the second part of 2023, as Beyoncé will also premiere her boundary-pushing film based on her Renaissance Tour journey on December 1, setting up Swift and Beyoncé for an interesting box office battle.

The year 2023 has been notable for its major box office battles, including the summer’s Barbie vs Oppenheimer, dubbed Barbenheimer. Bringing the year to a close, the music scene includes its own box office clash between legendary titans Beyoncé and Taylor Swift, with the two icons debuting filmed versions of their hit 2023 concert tours. Despite their real-life friendship and public support for each other, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift had a lot of rivaling accomplishments this year, as they’ve both embarked on record-breaking tours across the globe. Both singers documented their journey with concert films that would hit theaters in late 2023, and Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour movie has a lot of challenges ahead to keep up with

Beyoncé’s Renaissance Movie Probably Can’t Beat Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Movie At The Box Office

Before its premiere, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert film had generated over $100 million in ticket presales. The concert film, which had an estimated budget between $10 million–$20 million, went on to gain critical and commercial acclaim, with The Eras Tour reaching a box office total of $250 million worldwide after less than two months in theaters. This amount is absolutely incredible for a concert film, as the only genre entry that has surpassed this total was Michael Jackson’s This Is It in 2009. Michael Jackson’s movie came to a total of $261 million worldwide with a $189 million international push (via Box Office Mojo), which also premiered only a few months after the late King of Pop’s death.

Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour movie is still projected to be a box office success, but Swift’s $250 million milestone has set a precedent that’s unlikely to be beaten. Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour concerts grossed over $579 million across 56 stops internationally and became her highest-grossing tour so far. Swift’s The Eras Tour, which is expected to gross over $2.2 billion (via CNN) is still ongoing, and she isn’t even halfway through her international dates. Yet, Beyoncé also has a strong fanbase, with her film being able to pull in the fans who didn’t manage to score tickets for her now-ended international Renaissance Tour. As such, she’ll still doubtlessly be able to break a few milestones of her own.

How Much Will Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour Movie Make At The Box Office?

Beyoncé’s tour was attended by 2.2 million fans, and her concert film takes a documentary approach to the journey. Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé will not show just her big stage moments, but give a behind-the-scenes experience of her first solo tour since 2016’s The Formation World Tour, as well as a glimpse at her craft process. Her film will be available in both standard and IMAX formats, as well as with Dolby Sound in some theaters. Renaissance also premieres during a slow week for new theatrical releases, which could improve her movie’s box office numbers.

Similar to Swift, Beyoncé also teamed up with AMC Theaters to distribute her film. Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé is tracking to make over $20 million in its domestic opening weekend (per Deadline), with tickets priced at $22. Its pre-sale numbers were estimated between $6–$7 million. Compared to Swift’s three-hour concert film, Queen Bey’s will have a runtime of 168 minutes, and will include footage from different shows, encompassing almost all the songs from the concert.

Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour Movie Could Still Join Taylor Swift In Breaking Box Office Records

Beyonce’s Concert Film Could Have The Second Highest-Grossing Opening

Taylor Swift’s movie reaching the $250 million milestone might make it impossible for Beyoncé’s concert film to do the same, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be successful. Beyoncé’s film has a good chance of making over $100 million worldwide, and that is no easy feat. The only concert films to reach this milestone are Swift’s The Eras Tour and Michael Jackson’s This Is It. In fact, Beyoncé’s concert film could perform even better than Michael Jackson’s doc, which only brought a little over $72 million domestically.

Comparing the success of both films is inevitable, but Taylor Swift and Beyoncé have proven several times that they are not rivals. Beyoncé attended The Eras Tour concert film premiere, and Swift has often provided her support for the revolutionary musician. However, at a time when Hollywood and the box office need big wins, both Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour and Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé have delivered quality and quantity, bringing fans to the theaters for some unforgettable experiences.
