Tottenham set two unwanted Premier League records when they surrendered a lead to lose 2-1 to West Ham on Thursday.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Ange Postecoglou’s team took an early lead in the Premier League match at home to West Ham thanks to a header from Cristian Romero. The away side fought back in the second half, however, pulling level through Jarrod Bowen before James Ward-Prowse scored the winner after 74 minutes.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Having taken just one point from their last five matches in the Premier League, Spurs’ form has taken a nosedive in recent weeks despite their excellent starts, so much so that they have set two new records. They are the first Premier League team in history to fail to win five consecutive games despite going 1-0 up on each occasion, according to Opta. Also, for the first time a Premier League team has lost three straight home games after taking a one-goal lead each time.
DID YOU KNOW?
It does not stop there, however, as Squawka reveals that Spurs have now dropped 16 points from winning positions so far this season – that’s more than any team in the top seven leagues of Europe in 2023-24.
WHAT NEXT FOR TOTTENHAM?
As recently as early-November, Spurs were top of the Premier League table and now sit fifth in the table and nine points behind new leaders Arsenal. Postecoglou’s team will attempt to end their five-game winless run when they come up against Newcastle on Sunday.
