Erik ten Hag is in the dark about Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw’s condition after the duo went off injured in Manchester United’s loss to Bayern Munich.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Maguire pulled up in the first half with an apparent groin injury and, despite initially appearing to try to play on, called to be substituted immediately afterwards. Fellow defender Shaw played the entirety of the first half but did not emerge for the second, having suffered a suspected hamstring injury. United went on to lose 1-0 and crashed out of Europe.
WHAT TEN HAG SAID
Asked for an early assessment of the injuries the two United stars suffered, Ten Hag admitted it is too soon to make a prediction. He said: “We have to wait 24 hours. And then a assessment and diagnosis. So we have to wait for it.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE
The loss of Maguire and Shaw comes as a massive blow to United, who are scheduled to face Liverpool at Anfield in their next game in the Premier League. United have already been hit with several injury issues recently. Defenders Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia are still absent, while the likes of Christian Eriksen, Amadi Diallo and Casemiro are also out injured. Plus, Marcus Rashford missed the midweek match due to illness and it is not known if he will be back in the team for Sunday’s match.
WHAT NEXT FOR UNITED?
Ten Hag will be anxiously awaiting news on the defensive pair. Maguire has enjoyed an incredible resurgence in recent weeks, earning him the Player of the Month award in November, while Shaw has been a key part of the Red Devils’ back line.
