James Gunn Reveals What He Wants For The Guardians Of The Galaxy’s Future In The MCU

James Gunn might have ended his time in the MCU with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but the director has revealed where he wants the team to go next.

James Gunn has commented on what he wants for the Guardians of the Galaxy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after his departure. Gunn’s work on the cosmic franchise transformed the Guardians of the Galaxy into a popular superhero team. Following three Guardians of the Galaxy movies and a holiday special, Gunn has left the MCU to run DC Studios, and the director has revealed what he hopes will happen to the team in Guardians of the Galaxy 4 or other projects.

On Threads, Gunn revealed what he wants to happen with the Guardians of the Galaxy in the future.

Where The New Guardians Of The Galaxy Team Could Return In The MCU?

Solo Movies & Crossovers Are Possible For The Guardians Of The Galaxy’s MCU Future

While Gunn is done with the MCU for the time being, as he shifts his attention to building the new DC Universe, he set up an exciting new Guardians of the Galaxy team. Rocket Raccoon has become the leader of the cosmic squad, with the new iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy also including Groot, Cosmo the Spacedog, Phylla, Kraglin, and Adam Warlock. Adam’s pet, Blurp, was also seen with the new team.

Feige could appoint a new director to helm Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 or rename the franchise and start fresh for a new trilogy. Rocket has become one of the MCU’s most beloved characters, and after his turn as the focal point of the excellent Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it makes sense for the character’s new team to receive another solo movie. Through a continuation of the Guardians’ solo franchise, the MCU can keep expanding its cosmic corner.

The new Guardians of the Galaxy could also return in supporting roles in other projects. The upcoming two Avengers movies — The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars — should continue the trend of including several MCU heroes from the previous two Avengers entries, which makes an appearance from the Guardians of the Galaxy likely. With an announced return for Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord, a possible solo Peter Quill project could include Rocket and the Guardians in some way. Other cosmic projects like the in-development Nova series would also be perfect for the Guardians of the Galaxy to return.
