Pundit Jamie Redknapp has claimed that one Chelsea player needs to begin taking advice from teammate Raheem Sterling in order to improve.
He told Sky Sports that Mykhailo Mudryk’s instincts as a winger need to improve after watching him play last night.
Mudryk found the net at a crucial time for the Blues, scoring in added time to send last night’s EFL Cup tie to penalties.
He found the net from the spot too, with Chelsea players not missing as they booked their place in the last four.
The 22-year-old’s goal in added time did come with an element of fortune, after an error made by Kieran Trippier.
Redknapp has now claimed that he believes the winger got lucky with his goal, and could learn a thing or two from his teammates.
Mudryk told to learn from Sterling
He said: “Mudryk I was thinking the first time the ball came into the box he wasn’t in there and this is a part of the game he has to learn. He is on the far side here and one of the best we have seen in the Premier League at getting in at the back post is Raheem Sterling, he needs to take a leaf out of his book.
“He should be attacking the ball, he doesn’t, and it gets cleared away by Newcastle and it’s interesting to watch his reaction. The wide men score so many goals in the Premier League, look at Salah’s numbers and players like that, but is he trying to find the ball? Not really. Is he trying to make an angle? No. These are part of the games he has to learn.
“[Then for the goal], still he’s walking. Kieran Trippier I think makes this mistake because normally a winger is coming in but he gets caught in two minds, not knowing whether to head it or to chest it down or clear it. If he had got body to body I don’t think he would have done that. He should be arriving on that Mudryk but he gets lucky to an extent.”
The two players are very rarely playing together for the Blues right now, with Cole Palmer in undroppable form right now.
Any attackers at Stamford Bridge will also be contending with the imminent return of Christopher Nkunku, after his debut last night.
