Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez says he is learning a lot from one of his teammates.
Enzo Fernandez has not been in England and at Chelsea for long, joining the Blues from Benfica just under a year ago.
He has now shared which Chelsea player has really helped him since he arrived at Stamford Bridge on Uncut.
Fernandez had to be taken off in his side’s Carabao Cup quarter-final tie with Newcastle United on Tuesday after feeling sick.
Enzo Fernandez learning from Thiago Silva
Fernandez has been speaking very highly of Thiago Silva, sharing that the two talk often.
On the Brazilian, he said: “Yeah, it’s true that he’s very intelligent. I learn a lot from him every day. He speaks to me a lot, so I take on board his best advice.
“He’s a very calm guy that you can talk to about anything and who always helps the young players.”
One reason to keep Thiago Silva
It looks like Fernandez may not be able to lean on Silva next season. His contract expires in the summer and there is nothing to suggest that he is going to sign a new one.
The fact that the Brazil international is able to help the younger players in the squad, though, is just one reason why Chelsea should keep hold of him.
Of course, now 39, Silva is not getting any younger. However, that has not stopped him from playing practically all of Chelsea’s Premier League games this term.
Despite his age, it is quite clear that he is still able to play at this level. The Blues should not be too hasty to get rid of him just to bring in someone younger, especially when their other centre-backs are also quite young.
Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana are both under 24, while Levi Colwill is not even 21 yet. It is a pretty young defence Mauricio Pochettino could end up having next term.
There is still plenty of time for Silva to sign a contract extension. But there is so much silence right now, enough to suggest that he is probably going to leave before the start of the 2024/25 campaign.
