Rebellious fashion of Lisa and Korean female artists

Recently, many fashion trends have caused controversy in Korea, such as showing off underwear and low-waisted pants. Experts say that the above fashion style can easily negatively affect young audiences.

The Kpop industry is known for its avant-garde and bold fashion trends. Many idols become fashion icons and trendsetters. But many trends when favored by Korean celebrities have caused controversy, such as the underboob trend or recently the no-pants trend…

More and more bold

The no-pants trend is causing the most discussion in Korea. One of the singers at the forefront of this hot but controversial trend is Yun Jin, a member of the girl group Le Sserafim. The 23-year-old girl attracted attention when wearing only sports underwear and a puffer jacket in the teaser video released on January 26.

Group (G)I-DLE chose a similar style in the MV Super Lady released on January 11. At the Yellow Coin Concert, a charity show in Paris that took place on January 27, BlackPink’s Lisa also promoted this trend.

Jennie, Sistar19, Han So Hee, Moon Ga Young or most recently Nana (former member of After School group)… are not outside the above trend.

This trend is especially controversial in Kpop where the majority of fans are teenagers. Korean media raised concerns about the possibility of young fans blindly imitating. Some critics even argue that this trend represents the commercialization of 𝑠e𝑥 under the guise of fashion innovation.

The bra-revealing trend also raises concerns about overly revealing fashion. In the teaser for the MV EASY of the group Le Sserafim, Chae Won immediately attracted attention with her bold fashion style. The female singer combined a bra made of many unique accessories with a white crop top showing off her slim waist.

Because of the influence of the Y2K trend (a popular style from the late 1990s to the early 2000s), in 2022, underboob fashion is on the rise. Then, by 2023, the fashion of low-waisted pants revealing the pelvis was also popular in Korea.

With the underboob trend, BlackPink’s Jennie is one of the leading stars. This trend is understood as “super crop top” with shirts revealing the lower 1/3 of the chest. The BlackPink member tried this trend when she was in Hawaii in early March 2022. The pink crop top Jennie wears is from the Jacquemus Spring 2022 Ready-to-Wear Show collection.

Solo artists BIBI, Chae Won or HyunA also choose a similar style.

With low-rise pants, this style is popular with many fashion houses and both Korean and international stars. This design helps idols show off their slim waists and long legs. Jennie was once again called by name. When attending Coachella in 2022, the female singer combined low-rise pants with the design of NOLM’s MARINE SERRE SS22 collection to show off her 𝑠e𝑥y back.

ITZY’s youngest sister Yuna caused a stir when she wore low-waisted pants, revealing her impressive figure with a slim waist and wide hips during the performance of U Go Girl at the 2022 KBS Song Festival. In addition, crotchless pants (worn by So Yeon to take photos for Y Magazine ), revealing underwear or short skirts… are also fashion styles that make many Korean audiences unhappy.

In another hand

Fashion is a form of expressing each person’s personality. Anyone can freely express their own fashion style. However, it seems that celebrities are taking the lead in popularizing revealing outfits. This makes many viewers worried. They believe that trends that are too bold can have a negative impact on teenagers, such as imitating celebrity outfits, MoneyS said .

An official from the National Federation of Parents’ Organizations told Ilyo : “I’m worried because teenagers are very sensitive to image and easily influenced by celebrities. For young children, they are gods.” idolize and love singers and actors. Therefore, when idols wear provocative outfits, young fans inevitably want to follow suit. Even if there is no such dress code , I hope celebrities choose more suitable outfits.”

Meanwhile, an expert in the entertainment industry told Ilyo : “Underboob fashion symbolizes freedom. Pantless fashion can also be seen as an implication of liberation, not simply exposing the body. However, social norms still discourage excessive body exposure.”

In response to bold fashion trends becoming increasingly popular in Korea, Lee Eun Hee, a professor at Ewha Womans University, said: “Exposing beauty is a good thing, but the level needs to be controlled. . From the entertainment company’s perspective, they feel they need to be different to attract attention to the groups. That’s why they pursue more unique and provocative concepts. However, it can create ‘side effects’, such as elementary school students imitating 𝑠e𝑥y fashion. So-called celebrities must be held accountable for their social impact.”

Picture book about 20th century fashion

The work Prada 96-98 was identified by publisher IDEA as one of the best fashion photo books ever. In Glen Luchford’s book, readers can look back at a collection of photos taken during promotional campaigns of the late ’90s. The book also features an in-depth interview with Luchford, by writer Lou Stoppard lead. Their conversations help readers understand the inspiration behind this fashion campaign, as well as what has changed in the time since then.
