Selena Gomez is ‘done being silent.’
The 27-year-old singer/actress stated that she is no longer ‘protecting those who never protected’ her as she embarks on a new chapter in her life and career.
Gomez, who released her critically lauded third album Rare on Friday, previously told Billboard that she’s tired of living her life by other people’s rules and judgments.
‘I’ve mentioned it before, but I used to be frightened of expressing anything,’ she told reporter Jason Lipshutz. ‘I would find myself protecting people who had never safeguarded or cared for me.’
While she didn’t say who she was talking about, it was obvious to conclude that her contentious relationship with ex Justin Bieber was the source for several of the songs.
‘I wouldn’t want to say the wrong thing, and I wouldn’t want people to believe I was motivated by anything other than being a decent person – because it is who I am, and I am proud of it.
But, at some time, the singer recognized there was no reason to kowtow to other people’s emotions.
‘I was just done, you know?’ she stated. ‘I just finished being silent, and I felt like I deserved a time for myself after going through so much and throwing it all into this record.’
‘I wanted a record that made people feel something, whether it was a bad relationship to go through, or regaining your confidence, or being alright with simply having fun,’ Selena told Billboard.
‘There are many layers to it, and I’m really pleased that it ended up becoming what it is now, after four and a half years.’
And she’s not afraid of people’s reactions anymore, telling the magazine: ‘People might react however they might react, but I know that I’m proud of putting out the music that I did with the content that it has, because I want nothing more than to relate to people — and I want them to know that they’re not alone, and that all of these feelings are completely normal. And they saw me grow up, so I believe this was an essential record for me to stand up on.’
