One Piece: Trafalgar Law’s Devil Fruit Powers and Techniques, Explained

Trafalgar Law is an exceptional fighter and a great doctor. All this is thanks to his Devil Fruit, which grants him numerous versatile techniques.

One Piece enjoys no shortage of iconic characters, but even among its crowded field, Trafalgar Law is a fan favorite. Alongside Monkey D. Luffy, Law is a member of the Worst Generation, and following the Raid on Onigashima, the pair each possess a bounty of three billion Berries. As a child, Law vigorously trained in martial arts under Lao G, an executive of the Donquixote Family, giving him exceptional hand-to-hand combat abilities. The former Warlord of the Sea’s Haki is also exceptionally strong; however, he still primarily relies on his Devil Fruit abilities during battle. With this power, he became one of the Grand Line’s most feared warriors.

Many years before the events of One PieceLaw consumed a paramecia-type Devil Fruit known as the Op-Op Fruit. This Devil Fruit is arguably the most sought-after Fruit in the entire series, allowing its user to completely manipulate all physical matter within its range of effect. In the hands of someone with an understanding of human anatomy, its potential knows no bounds. Luckily for Trafalgar D. Water Law, he has practised medicine from a very young age, making him the perfect candidate for the Op-Op Fruit. Following One Piece‘s two-year timeskip, Law’s powers have grown even more complex, and as a war against the World Government brews on the horizon, he’s sure to play a major role in the conflict.

Updated on February 27, 2024, by Ajay Aravind: As One Piece gradually enters the Final Saga, the story is likely to get a lot more explosive. With the upcoming world war, Luffy needs all his allies to fight with him. Although Law is one of the strongest characters in the story, it’s likely that he’s going to get even more powerful for the final showdowns. As such, we’ve updated this feature with some more information.

What Is Trafalgar D. Water Law’s Devil Fruit?

Law Gets His Unique Powers From The Op-Op Devil Fruit

During Trafalgar D. Water Law’s childhood, he befriends Donquixote Rosinante, the younger brother of the infamous criminal Donquixote Doflamingo. Law and Rosinante quickly grow close, so when it becomes clear that Doflamingo is going to kill Rosinante, the undercover Marine feeds Law the Op-Op Fruit, guaranteeing that it won’t fall into Doflamingo’s hands. Before being eaten by Law, the Op-Op Fruit was consumed by several famous doctors, making it one of the most well-known Devil Fruits in One Piece history. With the right medical knowledge, its user has the power to perform miraculous surgeries, cure untreatable diseases, and even circumvent physical disabilities.

To many adventurers in the Grand Line, the Op-Op Devil Fruit has become known as the Ultimate Devil Fruit; according to rumors, it even has the ability to grant immortality to someone else. Unfortunately, this act would cost the user their life, and because of its massive potential, villains like Donquixote Doflamingo have made it their goal to acquire the Devil Fruit. As indicated by its name, the Op-Op Fruit is said to generate a spherical “operating room” that grants its user the ability to rearrange any material within its range. As such, this level of versatility surpasses that of almost any Devil Fruit in history. Thanks to Law’s aptitude for using the Devil Fruit, he earns notoriety throughout the Grand Line, ultimately leading him to befriend Luffy and take on the strongest pirates in the New World.

The Op-Op Fruit’s Techniques, Pre-Awakening

Trafalgar D. Law’s iconic technique, ROOM, is the medium for almost of all his attacks. To implement his Devil Fruit powers, he first needs to create an area of effect — referred to as a room — that surrounds him and his targets. The size of the room depends on how far he is from the enemy. However, as seen in the Dressrosa Arc, this technique can years away from his lifespan if he overextends its perimeters. Inside the room, the Surgeon of Death can implement techniques like Amputate, which uses his sword to cleanly cut his opponent into pieces without actually causing them damage. This ability also proves to be extremely helpful during surgeries, allowing Law to reach parts of a patient’s body that would normally be extremely hard to access.

Radio Knife is an advanced version of Amputate where Law charges his sword with electricity before slicing up his opponents. In real life, a radio knife is a surgical instrument that uses a high-frequency electric arc to cut away or through tissue, making its One Piece counterpart another example of Law’s medical-themed attacks. On top of this, Law regularly employs another ability known as Shambles, which can swap the positions of any object inside the Op-Op Fruit’s area of effect. This versatile technique can help him dodge enemy attacks, be used for transportation purposes, or directly attack his enemies. Oddly, Shambles can also transfer the personalities of different individuals between their bodies, which Law does several times throughout the Punk Hazard Arc. These effects are permanent until Law reverses them, giving him the option of extorting his opponents in exchange for returning them to their bodies.

The Op-Op Fruit is also capable of moving massive objects, demonstrating that it’s useful for much more than minor changes to the human body and atmosphere. One technique, Takt, grants Trafalgar Law the ability to levitate humongous objects by simply lifting his fingers, while another, Injection Shot, makes Law’s sword fire like an overpowered firearm. These attacks inflict massive damage on their targets, making them extremely useful in battle.

That said, most of them pale in comparison to the former Warlord’s strongest pre-Awakening technique: Gamma Knife. This technique creates a short blade of energy that can send a huge shockwave through its target’s body, destroying internal organs in an instant — even Kaido is injured when he takes the attack full force. However, as powerful as all these techniques are, Law’s firepower receives a massive boost after the Awakening of his Devil Fruit during the Raid on Onigashima.

The Op-Op Fruit’s Techniques, Post-Awakening

Trafalgar D. Water Law’s strength grows significantly during the Wano Country Arc, primarily because of the Awakening of his Devil Fruit. The Op-Op Fruit’s Awakened techniques are incredibly powerful, and they quickly help Law and his ally, Eustass Kid, overwhelm Charlotte Linlin, one of the strongest characters in One Piece. One of these techniques, K-ROOM, is an evolution of Law’s Room ability. Instead of generating a spherical “operating room,” K-ROOM generates a similar space that Law can use to coat specific objects.

For instance, when the Surgeon of Death uses K-ROOM on his sword, he can control the sword’s properties, allowing him to manipulate its length, width, or density at any moment. Similarly, Law can also use R-ROOM to coat an individual with this effect, which grants him the ability to manipulate individuals with significantly stronger Haki than previously before. By combining these two effects, Law can utilize his Anesthesia technique, which grants him the ability to pierce any object or individual without harming them.

Although Anesthesia’s benefit isn’t immediately obvious, it allows Law’s sword to reach the depth needed to use his two strongest attacks: Shock Wille and Puncture Wille. Both of these attacks operate similarly to Gamma Knife, sending a massive electrical shockwave through the body of their target. However, since Anesthesia allows Law to pierce through any material, Shock Wille and Puncture Wille strike the core of their target, making them several times stronger than any of the Op-Op Fruit’s non-Awakened techniques. Their firepower even brings Big Mom to her knees, signaling that Trafalgar D. Water Law’s Devil Fruit is truly one of the most powerful weapons in One Piece history.
