Thousand-year-old mummy with intact hair on top of the pyramid

Sharing with Reuters, archaeologist Mirella Ganoza said that the ancient remains were found inside a tomb at the Huaca Pucllana monument. This was originally a large clay pyramid, more than 21 meters high.

The expert group added that the body was wrapped in a simple layer of cloth. Inside the pyramid tomb also contains a number of artifacts such as ceramic vases and textiles. These items will help archaeologists determine the age of the tomb.

Experts initially determined that the mummy dates back to around 1,000 AD. At that time, the Ychsma people living in this area are said to have built at least 16 pyramids and dominated Peru’s central coast until the rise of the Inca Empire.

The Huaca Pucllana archaeological site was built around 500 AD, located in the center of Miraflores. During excavations in early 2023, archaeologists discovered a tomb containing remains located at the top of the pyramid and was identified as belonging to the Ychsma culture.

The mummy’s gender has not yet been determined. With about 400 archaeological sites in Lima, there is evidence that helps experts answer questions about the past. The discovery of this new mummy will help them assess the health, cultural and social conditions of indigenous Peruvians.

In early 2023, archaeologists found a 1,000-year-old mummy at the Cajamarquilla archaeological site, about 25km from Lima city. According to NBC, the mummy belongs to a teenager, identified as a victim of human sacrifice.
