Tiger Woods was told to stop ’embarrassing himself’ after his supposedly disastrous defeat at the PGA Championship

Tiger Woods remains confident he can discover the kind of form to challenge with the best players in the world, but his second-round display at the PGA Championship has convinced some fans that is no longer possible.

The 48-year-old made history by making his 24th consecutive cut at Augusta last month.

It was the first time in two years that Woods played 72 holes, but it proved to be a weekend to forget for the 15-time major champion as he carded a round of 82 on the Saturday.

Woods came into Valhalla Golf Club with optimism of improving and showed promising signs on Thursday.

A disappointing end to his round on Thursday with back-to-back bogeys prevented Woods from finishing in the red.

And it set a trend heading into Friday that only got worse for the golfing icon as he carded two triple bogeys in the opening four holes to all but prevent him from making the cut.

He still managed to get some cheers from the many patrons choosing to follow his every shot after carding back-to-back birdies on holes seven and eight.

But he dropped those shots back on holes 11 and 12 with two bogeys to leave him at eight-over-par for the tournament.

Woods cut a despondent figure throughout the day as he battled with his game.

And some viewers were also not enjoying seeing Woods pop up on screen as much as he did during the day’s coverage.

Woods has not gave any indication that he is considering retirement, but some believe it’s something he should begin to consider.

One viewer moaned: “At this stage Tiger is doing real damage to his brand. He is embarrassing himself. I get the competitive fire argument. But if u cannot practice, u cannot play competitive golf.”

Another said: “Tiger needs to hang it up, embarrassing. Taking entry spots from younger guys trying to make it. Been a great career Tiger, go out with class, perhaps to late for that, but anyway.”

A third posted: “It’s time for Tiger Woods to call it a career and stop embarrassing himself.”

One other person wrote: “Tiger just needs to retire. It’s not even that he’s not dominant anymore but he’s at a point where making the cut is a miracle.”

Tiger Woods will now turn his focus to the US Open next month

Another noted: “I’d rather Tiger retire than to go out like this.”

Woods will now turn his focus to the US Open next month, which will be held at Pinehurst.

The USGA confirmed the three-time US Open champion had been given a special exemption to play in the major.
