Recently, when asked how he feels about the song’s eventual resurgence, Lautner breezily told the TODAY show that he was not sweating it.
‘I think it’s a great album. Yeah, I feel safe,’ he said, adding that his wife — who previously admitted to being a fan of Swift — was very excited for its release.
Swift and Lautner met on the set of the star-studded rom-com Valentine’s Day in 2009 and went on to enjoy a whirlwind romance that fall.
Unlike many of her breakup songs, Back To December is Swift apologizing to Lautner for how things ended.
Though he likely won’t face the wrath of Swift’s devout fanbase, Lautner fears that the her ex John Mayer may not be as lucky. ‘Praying for John,’ the Michigan native added.
It’s long been alleged that the hitmaker’s shady track Dear John, which is featured on Speak Now, is about her age-gap relationship with the Mayer.
He told Rolling Stone in 2012 that the song ‘humiliated him’ and made him ‘feel terrible,’ insisting that ‘I didn’t deserve it. I’m pretty good at taking accountability now, and I never did anything to deserve that.’
He ended by saying that ‘it was a really lousy thing for her to do’ and that he found it be ‘cheap songwriting’ on Swift’s part. Swift and Mayer dated from December 2009 to to early 2010 when she was just 19 and he was 32.
