Scarlett Johansson experienced feelings of being overly š‘ eš‘„ualized and objectified during her early acting career.

She thought her career would end early on because she was seen in a certain way from a young age.

Scarlett Johansson might be regarded as one of Hollywoodā€™s most beautiful stars ā€“ but it hasnā€™t always been easy on the Oscar nominee.

ā€œI kind of became objectified and pigeonholed in this way where I felt like I wasnā€™t getting offers for work for things that I wanted to do,ā€ theĀ AvengersĀ star, 37, said on the landmark 500th episode of Dax Shepardā€™sĀ Armchair ExpertĀ podcast.

ā€œI remember thinking to myself, ā€˜I think people think Iā€™m 40 years old,ā€™ā€ said Johansson, who has been in films sinceĀ NorthĀ in 1994. ā€œIt somehow stopped being something that was desirable and something that I was fighting against.ā€

Pointing to her role as an aimless 22-year-old wife in Sofia Coppolaā€™s Oscar-winningĀ Lost In Translation, at which point Johansson herself was 17, opposite Bill Murrayā€™s unconventional middle-aged romantic lead, the actress said she was viewed as a veteran actor.

ā€œI got kind of pigeonholed into this weird hyperš‘ eš‘„ualised thing. I felt like (my career) was over,ā€ she explained.

These days, up-and-coming actors are ā€œallowed to be all these different things,ā€ said Johansson, noting: ā€œItā€™s another time, too. Weā€™re not even allowed to really pigeonhole other actors anymore, thankfully, right? People are much more dynamic.ā€

Noting that she feels like she spans two generations, Johansson at one point told Shepard she was encouraged to ā€œuse your feminine wiles, use your š‘ eš‘„ualityā€ to get ahead.

ā€œThereā€™s our generation I think thatā€™s done that but also been like ā€˜This doesnā€™t feel right. Thereā€™s gotta be some other way,ā€™ā€ she said, noting that women who are around 15 years younger believe, ā€œā€˜You donā€™t have to take any of that cā€”p. No pandering.ā€™ … Itā€™s an interesting place to be in the in-between of.ā€

Johansson said sheā€™s also learned that ā€œmeaningfulā€ change, whether in the entertainment industry or the world at large, isnā€™t linear.

ā€œIt takes two steps forward and two steps back, and then it gets better and then it gets worse. Itā€™s not finite,ā€ she said. ā€œI think if you donā€™t leave room for people to figure it out, then the actual progressive change doesnā€™t really happen.ā€
