Could Mohamed Salah break his Liverpol goal record this season?

Mohamed Salah is having an exceptional season for Liverpool. He might even get close to his goal record for the Reds.

Mohamed Salah has 10 Premier League goals already. He’s got 12 in all competitions, coming in 16 games. The Egyptian is on fire, in other words, and thriving on all levels for Liverpool.

It’s all a little reminiscent of his debut season for the Reds. Salah arrived on fire, scoring all season long and breaking the Premier League goalscoring record for a 38-game season. A record that stood until the last campaign when Erling Haaland broke it for Manchester City – the only player currently above him in the Premier League scoring charts.

So with this form, what are his chances of beating his record for the Reds?

Well, Salah’s now played a little over 31 per cent of his Premier League games for the season by now. His 10 goals are also 31 per cent of the way to his 32-goal season. So he’s actually right on course at the moment.

But it’s worth noting that in that 2017/18 season, Salah ‘only’ had nine goals at the 12-game mark, so he’s currently outperforming that particular campaign in terms of goals. Though, it’s obviously not that simple.

Salah had 11 in his first 12 Premier League games of the 2021/22 season. He started that one on fire and was arguably the best player on the planet over the first half of the campaign – many had him down for the Ballon d’Or.

However, Salah went away with Egypt for the AFCON that season, making it all the way to the final. It clearly took a lot out of him and he didn’t return to Liverpool in anything like the same form.

The forward bagged just six goals in the Premier League after returning, finishing with 23 for the season. While that’s still the second-most he’s managed for Liverpool, it wasn’t anything like what the first half of the season promised.

So while Salah is on track to break Liverpool’s Premier League goal record once again, the 2021/22 season shows us not to get too carried away. Especially as, once again, he will be at AFCON with Egypt in the New Year.
